Jamie Foxx in Lead Role of Tarantino’s Django Unchained

Jamie Foxx joins the star-studded cast of Quentin Tarantino’s next film, Django Unchained.

Foxx will play the titular character, a freed slave that attempts to rescue his long-lost love, Broomhilda, from a plantation owner named Calvin Candie will be played by Leonardo DiCaprio. Aiding Django on his adventure will be a German bounty hunter played by the amazing Christoph Waltz of Inglourious Basterds. Samuel L. Jackson , a Tarantino flick regular, will be playing Candie’s slave. Currently, Kerry Washington, who starred in Ray with Foxx, is in talks to play Broomhilda.

This is looking like another star-powered, cooler than the coolest version of Fonzie, historically tweaked Tarantino film. Apparently, Will Smith was offered the lead role, but turned it down (as many know, he also turned down the role of Neo). Before Foxx was cast, Tarantino met with Idris Elba, Terrence Howard, and Christ Tucker (really?) before shaking hands with Foxx.

“I think, just to be able to work with Quentin Tarantino and Samuel Jackson, Leonardo DiCaprio, and to be able to tell a story that needs to be told,” Foxx told CNN.

Django Unchained is scheduled for a Christmas Day 2012 release.
