Johnny Depp and Hunter S. Thompson Finally Together Again

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, with talented efforts by Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro, was a mad, psychedelic, raw piece of cinema.  That was in 1998, and Depp and Hunter S. Thompson fans have been eagerly waiting for over a decade for Depp to take on another Hunter S. Thompson film project. In the Rum Diary, Depp delves into the mind of Hunter S. Thompson once again, playing Raoul Duke, a freelance journalist that has hit a significant point in his life while writing for a run-down newspaper in the Caribbean.

This film was made about two years ago, and we finally get a trailer! There were speculations that the film wasn’t received too well, causing the maddening delay of the release of the film. Judging by the trailer alone, the film looks like a wild time and it’s always good when Depp is sporting his Hunter S. Thompson accent and quirky demeanor. It just may end up being close to the crazed universe we were flung into in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Bruce Robinson, director of the Killing Fields and Fat Man and Little Boy, took the reigns for the film. Depp is joined by the talents of Amber Heard and Aaron Eckhart. There’s no exact release date yet, as the trailer only says “coming soon” at the end. Until then, it’s time for a re-read of the Rum Diary.
